Shopify reports that Rebecca Minkoff shoppers who viewed a 3D model were 44% more likely to add it to cart and 27% more likely to place an order. The same Shopify report says Oakywood moved from almost no custom orders to about 200 to 300 per month after adding 3D scanning and a configurator. These visualization cases show a mechanism, not a guaranteed lift.

That confidence matters when an order cannot be returned to a shelf. NRF estimated that 19.3% of online sales would be returned in 2025 ( NRF and Happy Returns, 2025 Retail Returns Landscape). NRF does not claim the visualization feature lowers that rate. For a dealer, the safer commercial effect is direct: the buyer approves the pictured build and the same choices enter the quote.

How to choose 3D product visualization software

Choose by the output, not the picture. A polished interactive demo can hide an asset process that does not accept your CAD, a mobile payload your dealers cannot load, or a model that ends at a screenshot instead of a quote.

1. Where does the model come from?

Ask whether the system accepts your engineering design files, expects finished web assets, or includes artist work. The answer moves the setup price and ownership of catalog changes.

2. Where does it run, and how heavy is it?

Test the real model on the real phone and connection your dealers use. The median mobile home page was already 2,559 KB in 2025, including 911 KB of images and 632 KB of JavaScript ( HTTP Archive, Web Almanac 2025). 3. What drives the options?

If the build already exists as CAD, much of the modeling is done. What remains is conversion and reduction. A production STEP file is built for engineering accuracy. A browser needs a lighter interactive scene with the right geometry and materials.

A common design path is STEP or native CAD to glTF or GLB, followed by decimation, texture baking, PBR materials, and mesh compression. glTF 2.0 is ISO/IEC 12113:2022 and is designed for efficient transmission and loading of 3D scenes ( Khronos Group, glTF specification). The Khronos Asset Creation Guidelines 2.0 cover PBR workflows and Draco or MeshOpt compression for commerce-ready assets.

You may still need a 3D artist for cleanup, UVs, materials, or missing consumer-facing detail. You should not need an in-house artist to operate the viewer or publish routine updates. The vendor should make that pipeline legible, then deliver 3D product visuals that load within the page budget.

The platform

What a visual commerce platform adds

Visual commerce means selling from the picture. A visual commerce platform joins the live model to the choices, price, and order, so the picture becomes the storefront instead of a viewer beside it.

The manufacturer version needs more than a consumer checkout. It needs product rules, a price book for each dealer, a quote document, and an order the factory can build. Most product visualization ecommerce guides are written for a direct to consumer brand. A manufacturer with a dealer channel needs the same picture attached to a different order.

McKinsey's B2B Pulse found that 69% of seekers, 37% of innovators, and 19% of adapters would conduct transactions of $500,000 or more remotely. Self-service does not remove the dealer. It removes the work the dealer should not need the factory to do.

In a b2b dealer portal, the dealer is the buyer using visual commerce. The live model answers the configuration question. The platform answers the commercial one: which price applies, which margin is private, and what reaches production after approval.

The output

How a 3D model becomes a quote

Whichever software you choose, the model is worth what it produces after the last click. A beautiful visualizer that hands a dealer an invalid combination costs more and sells less than a plain one that refuses the build and prints the right price.

The expensive half is often invisible. Rules decide which combinations can be built. Dealer price lists decide what the buyer sees without exposing factory cost. The accepted configuration then becomes a quote and a specification that reaches the shop without being typed again. Scope that chain before choosing the view. Haug, Shafiee, and Hvam studied eight failed configurator projects and found that poor decisions in one phase created escalating problems in the phases that followed ( Computers in Industry, 2019). The lesson is not that the technology fails. A team must define the catalog, process, and output before it picks the picture.

Start with one catalog family. Map its options, constraints, prices, and production output. Then choose the lightest visual that makes the buyer's decision clear. A pergola configurator needs live geometry because span, roof, screens, and placement change. A finish-only catalog may not.
